Just because one has access to turntables, a mixer and music does not give you the automatic title of DJ. Having been a fan of the art of DJ’ing, I’ve also learned to appreciate the actual art behind it.

Growing up in Miami in the mid 90’s I became close to a group of people that will forever have a special place in my heart. I spent an obscene amount of time at a place called The Edge in Ft. Lauderdale. It was here that I was introduced to DJ’s Bruce Wilcox (R.I.P.), Greg Chin (aka DJ Stryke, Mike Sharpe and the legendary DJ Craze. It was through their vision and skills that I learned that there was more to just beat matching vinyl.

The reason for this post is because last night I was invited to spend some time with a friend of my wife’s to celebrate a birthday party at SET Miami. These days, if and when I do venture out to a nightclub I pay close attention to the DJ as it is a hobby and passion of mine so I was genuinely surprised to see and hear what I did last night.

The primary job of the DJ is to feel the vibe of the club patrons and ensure that the energy and feeling is on the dance floor. Unfortunately, that was not the case last night. I enjoyed the selection of music that was played but the energy and flow just wasn’t there. Just as the energy on the dance floor was beginning to build, a tempo or track change happened that caused the dance floor to empty. Whether it was by choice or the nature or nuance of the track, I don’t know but it was a disappointment to me and my wife.

I won’t name the DJ as it is the only time I’ve ever listened to one of their sets but I have a litany of friends that could’ve replaced them and done a much better job. Perhaps I caught him/her on a bad night and for that I apologize in advance if I am mistaken.
